Clean Slate Clinic

Do you feel like you need help with your drinking? Always waking up with a hangover? Worried you have lost control?

Established in 2015 the Clean Slate Clinic provides a discreet service for those wishing to address problem drinking. The Clinic, led by Dr Chris Davis and supported by highly-trained nursing staff, offers a 7 day outpatient program, follow-up consults, group support and external referrals as necessary. The program has a high success rate in helping people cut down or stop their problem drinking and is the subject of a medical research paper.

Specifically, the program involves:

  • an initial assessment to ascertain a client's suitability to the program
  • vitamin injections pre-detox
  • a urine drug screen
  • daily attendance at the clinic to receive medication that will facilitate the detox
  • daily breathalyser tests
  • a post-detox review at the end of the 10 day period, at which anti-craving medication will be offered
  • referral to external support groups
  • follow up appointments to track wellbeing

The program can be bulk-billed for concession card holders, with fees applying for other clients.

PrEP is here

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of medication by people without HIV to prevent infection. PrEP can be prescribed by your GP at ESD.

PrEP is very effective in preventing HIV infection provided it is taken regularly. PrEP is now available on the national health scheme - the PBS.  Your doctor at ESD can give you a prescription for PrEP that you can pick up from you local pharmacy.

If you have questions about PrEP It is best to talk to your GP at East Sydney Doctor. A very good summary of PrEP is available from ACON. http://endinghiv.org.au/nsw/stay-safe/epic/

The usual consultation fees apply for PrEP visits, however there is no charge for medication.  If you are interested in PrEP please make an appointment.

PrEP uses the combination of two anti-retroviral treatments (ART) of emtricabine with tenofovir in a single tablet (Truvada).

Cure Hepatitis C Now

New hepatitis C treatment is available now.

New hepatitis C medication is available now. At East Sydney Doctors we are committed to ensuring that all people living with hepatitis C have access to the new treatments. If you are interested in new treatment please book in with one of our general practitioners (GPs).

Many new medications are now available. Used in combination these medications can cure at least 95% of people with chronic hepatitis C infection. The course of treatment is usually only 8 - 12 weeks and causes few side effects in most people. Other new direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for hepatitis C will probably become available later in the year.

These medications can be prescribed by our GPs.  They are available through the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS), like other prescriptions medications, so the cost will be $38.30 a month per medication or $6.20 if you have a health care card.

Prior to treatment you need to have some investigations performed including a blood test to check your liver and to confirm the type of hepatitis C that you have. You can then have a FibroScan performed to determine the amount of liver scaring (fibrosis) that has occurred. We generally have access to a FibroScan machine at East Sydney Doctors. This test usually only takes about 5 minutes to perform and is painless.

If you have any questions talk to one of our experienced GPs. You can also ring the National Hepatitis Information line on 1800 437 222 or go on line to Hepatitis Australia http://www.hepatitisaustralia.com
